Do I need my footage in 4k or in 1080p?

This is one of the most common questions that comes up when it comes to the final deliverable. To be frank, the answer depends on how the final footage will be used.

If you are going to be using the final deliverable on social media, 1080p would be the most effective format for you. Many social media platforms use compression on high volume files, like video files, in order to get the video to load up on the viewer’s device as soon as possible. This can cause video artifacts when the video file is larger, such is the case with 4K files. This also applies when you are expecting your audience to watch it on a smaller screen. When you are comparing 4k to a 1080p video when using a smartphone, most audiences do not notice a difference.

On the flip side of this, however, if you are showcasing your video on a larger screen, I strongly recommend using a 4K file for your final deliverable. There is a noticeable difference between the two formats when you expand the image, and you want to use the highest quality possible (as long as it is effective). I would also recommend using 4K video files if you are showcasing the video offline (such as on a trade show floor).

Please make sure to keep in mind how you will be using the videos when you are debating how large of a file size you would like the deliverable. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us to get a more personalized recommendation for your project!
